Refresh Dublin

Thanks to all that organised the recent Refresh Dublin event at the Science Gallery in Trinity College Dublin.

refresh_logoIt was a very enlightening event with many of the big names in the Irish new media scene in attendance. All the talks were interesting in their own right and the variety of the topics made for a compelling evening. Eamon Leonard kicked off proceedings with a high level view of the current state of Web Development. While keeping high level he managed to give some very interesting nuggets of information that kept pencils at a ready.

Sabrina Dent gave a witty and sometimes scathing portrayal of the current Web Design scene. Sabrina made the the point that our best sites tend to be for our smallest companies, whilst our larger sites and particularly governmental sites have the worst designs.

The Playhouse Dublin team gave us an insight into how they turned Liberty Hall into an animated sphere. For those of us that thought it would be a complicated mission to pull off their talk certainly did nothing to banish that thought. Given the number of collaborators and scale of the project, I do think it is an installation Ireland can be very proud of.

Capping off the evening, Mercury Girl inc gave us an overview of the current status of Augmented Reality and what is on the horizon in that field.

What struck me from the evening was the willingness of the participants to get involved, the absence of any self promotion and the general goodwill between audience members. Seeing people who are essentially business competitors share ideas and resources shows a mature attitude, and a collected will to strive for excellence.

So thanks again to all the Refresh Dublin Crew and for those that missed the event the slides should be available online shortly.
