Spanish Pavilion for Expo Shanghai 2010

The Spanish Pavilion for Expo Shanghai 2010 really is a work of art. The concept of the building is based on the handicraft of making wicker baskets, a handicraft evidnet in both China the expo hosts and Spain. See the an extract about the concept from the architects Miralles Tagliabue EMBT below.

“The project proposed by EMBT consists on developing the handicraft technique of the wicker into a practice of construction. With this goal in mind, the universal language of the material works to build a bridge between East and West, and among Spain and China. With the volumetric, material, and structural inspirations of a wicker basket array, the void of the stands will mold a pavilion in which tubular metallic supports will sustain a wicker grid that will filter the light and function as a climatic membrane that wraps the pavilion.”

It really is a spectacular pavilion and worth checking out in greater detail on the EMBT website.

Silvercup Studios NYC

Took a photo of the signage for Silvercup Studios, home of TV productions like 30 Rock, The Sopranos, and movies like Date Night and other numerous New York based shows and movies. Had to photograph the sign on top of building – wish there were signs like that in Ireland.

Event Horizon

The art installation Event Horizon, Madison Square Park, NYC is running from March 26 to August 15 2010. Sculptor Antony Gormley’s installation has 31 life-size iron and fiberglass figures in and around Madison Square Park, 27 of them on rooftops of the area’s buildings, really is an impressive installation. See if you can spot the various sculptures on the buildings below…

The Highline Park NYC

Built in the 1930’s The Highline is an old overhead railway line to take heavy freight trains off the streets of Manhattans West Side. Instead of demolishing this rail line, it was salvaged by the City of New York Department of Parks and Recreation to become a park area in the sky above city traffic. Designed by the architectural firm Diller Scofido + Renfro the highline experience is definitely recommended.

New Museum New York

On a recent visit to New York, I had the pleasure of visiting the New Museum 235 Bowery Street. It really is a spectacular building both inside and outside. In fact recently Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, partners in the architectural firm, SANAA who designed the museum, have been chosen as the 2010 Laureates of the Pritzker Architecture Prize for their designs.

Kodak Brownie Camera Revived for 2012 Olympics

The Kodak Brownie Camera Revived has been for 2012 Olympics. Designed by James Coleman the Kodak Brownie has some of the features of the old Kodak Brownie (see right) like having to view the image through the lens from above.

The new Kodak Brownie design is a celebration of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The various cameras are colourful and in keeping with the London 2012 logo.

While researching for a design project we are currently working on, I found this really cool article Accept Defeat: The Neuroscience of Screwing Up by Jonah Lehrer in Wired magazine. The piece traces how you can learn from the messiness of real failed experiments, while concentrating particularly on the work of Kevin Dunbar who is a researcher who studies how scientists study things – how they fail and succeed. Its an interesting area to explore in order to improve work processes and an article definitely worth checking out…
