Cork Floods Day 3

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

The recent flooding is a real concern for residents and businesses alike here in Cork. Hopefully the worst is over for all concerned. I visited the point where the river Lee divides this morning. Parts of the surrounding area the Lee Road and the Mardyke Arena UCC – are still submerged. The photographs below don’t begin to capture the level of destruction from this flooding. We’ve had to leave our offices to work from home due to water cuts but its a minor inconvenience compare to others who have suffered and continue to suffer greatly. We offer all the residents and businesses alike our best wishes in the coming weeks as we approach Christmas.

Cork City Floods

Friday, November 20th, 2009

Normally we don’t do weather reports but this morning we and the rest of Cork awoke to find the entire city centre flooded. I donned my raincoat and took a walk into town on my lunch to have a closer look. Fortunately most of the floods had receded by then but there was still a small bit of flood at the back of the court house. Garda checkpoints prevented people having a closer look at the damage around the Mardyke and the Mercy Hospital. Here’s a interesting piece on when Washington Street was flooded in 1853.

They don’t make them like they used to…

Walking down Cornmarket Street in Cork City, I spotted this gem opposite the Garda Station. It’s great to find unique buildings like this remaining intact and in such good condition. The form of the disused public toilet is characteristic of its era, as is the attached/craved typography, which is a particular interest to us. Typography is a very important element of graphic design and this building shows us designers from its era paid particularly good attention to it.
